TIME TO SET SAIL...EEK!!

David de Rothschild and his crew are already 8 days out to sea in the much heralded Plastiki sail boat made almost entirely out of recycled plastic material, including 1,200 gas filled plastic bottles. And David is sending followers Twitter updates from @DRexplore daily.

Plastiki On the pacific

EARTH DAY 2010
The 22nd of April will mark the 40th year of Earth day, some 14,600 days since thousands of college students and American citizens first rallied against the deterioration of our environment. In the decades since Earth Day was founded it has transformed into a worldwide event involving a billion people and spreading the message that the inhabitants of this planet care.

Upon their arrival, the crew was greeted at by local residents who performed cultural songs and dances, as well as offered them drinks and chocolate -- traditional treats on the Republic of Kiripbati island.

TIME IN SAMOA

"We had a visit from the ambassador of the United States for Samoa, who came and took a tour of the vessel, and he talked about some of the recycling polices in Samoa. We also met a gentlemen who has set up his own recycling campaign, and he’s managed to set up a bag refuse collection to try and encourage all the stores to credit the individuals who are bringing their own bags back. Samoa is super clean, the community is really inspired to recycle, and I think that there is a huge amount that we can learn about having pride in your own environment."

AUGUST :

Plastiki Arrives In Australia

Committed to “highlight(ing) solutions to protect our oceans and beat (plastic) waste”, De Rothchild’s fully recyclable boat is impressive not only because it made the journey intact, but more specifically because it did so utilizing thousands of recycled plastic containers anchored together with cashew and sugar cane glue. Now that the journey is concluded, they might just use the Plasiki as a learning tool rather than dismantling it for the recycling pile as was originally the plan. One of the main goals of taking on such a risky endeavor has been to bring greater public awareness to ocean pollution and the consequent plight of marine creatures.

This year we invited David de Rothschild from The Plastiki Voyage, to engage, inspire and enlighten the NYC Green Community and beyond, about the complex issu...e of plastics in the ocean and how we can take action for positive change. The Plastiki is a 60ft catamaran made from 12,500 plastic bottles, which sailed from San Francisco, 8000 miles across the Pacific to Sydney, Australia, to raise awareness about the Great Pacific Garbage Patches.
